Personal correspondence of Biggs and his family. Pre-Civil War letters refer to a mercantile firm in which the Biggs family had an interest. Wartime correspondence of sons Henry A. and William Biggs concern their service in the 17th North Carolina Infantry Regiment and the 1st Artillery Regiment and their involvement in the Siege of Petersburg, Va., the capture of Fort Fisher, N.C., and fighting near Wilmington, N.C. Correspondence of other family members reflects civilian life in North Carolina during the war.

William Biggs was born in Juneau in 1904, and lived there most of his life. He worked at the Hirst-Chichagof Mine in Kimshan (Kinshan) Cove on Chichagof Island from 1928 until 1941, as postmaster, radio operator and storekeeper at various times. He married Petronell "Nell" Marthe in 1941, they bought a house in Juneau and stayed the remainder of their lives. Asa Biggs was born in Williamston, N.C., on 4 February 1811, and died in Norfolk, Va., on 6 March 1878. He attended the Williamston Academy, studied law, and passed the bar in 1831. Biggs served in the North Carolina Constitutional Convention of 1835; the North Carolina House of Commons in 1840 and 1842; the state Senate in 1844 and 1854; the United States House of Representatives, 1845-1847; and the United States Senate, 1855-1858.
